World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Item upgrades can be used to improve the stats of a particular item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it can boost the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats. Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount. Item Level When an item gets upgraded, its base stats improve in value. This is the sum of all the upgraded perks (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrading items can be expensive dependent on the upgrader and what type of upgrade you choose to make. This is due to the sheer number of perks that must be altered to upgrade an item. It is also used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit how much PvP gear players can wear as PvP is restricted at a lower level. The average item level is listed on the character sheet. When deciding whether to purchase or sell gear, players can compare the item level. It's an indicator of the damage and quality. The level of the item can be used to compare items when evaluating the inventory of a vendor. On your PC, you can see the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. It can also be located by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat. There are several theories about how the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that determines how much an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values, and also that sockets have gems that increase the item's overall value. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl, which is usually close to Blizzard's real item level. However, this isn't the only factor that affects an item's ilvl, as the level of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, such as by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher value. Item Stats Item stats are a big part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game utilizes them in various ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon, and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The stats of a base weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat mods which are then increased by the player's skill. Upgrades to an item may boost its stats. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. For instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while items with rare tiers can be upgraded many times, at higher costs. Affixes are another way to alter the stats of an item. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Affixes can provide the item additional damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving the dead or cutting down cooldowns) or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item. At present, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with circles arrows. This will cost a specific amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges similar to other methods of rerolling. Players can choose to upgrade an item by specific stats, or reroll affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However every item will contain at least one stat in the same range, unless it's an item that is unique, or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss. Another thing that can be modified by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or choosing which stats to boost. But, like base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time. Item Luck The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops, and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves and is therefore more useful in the initial game run as opposed to later ones, because most players value greater weapon scaling and defense over damage gains. In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each item level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing. Armor, shields and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck, or to increase the existing Luck of an item, up to 140. Furthermore, certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be purchased in the shops or made by using the appropriate ingredients. Item Failure Item upgrades are costly and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful. When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to how much the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%.. The success of an item upgrade is also affected by the Luck of that item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent. It is important to note that upgrade item s are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
